Diigo Update 11/22/2021

  • "It is now widely recognised that reductionist, sectoral, ad hoc and short-term policies are inadequate to face the systemic structural issues which threaten the future. New analytical and systems-oriented approaches are required both to understand and to manage the connected systemic issues of the modern world. As governments are forced by reality to move towards more integrated systems-based approaches to the formulation and implementation of policy, it will become increasingly necessary to build new analytical capabilities within governments. New economic thinking and systems-based approaches offer enormous potential and Government Economists for New Economic Systems (GENESYS) offers a platform for debating, experimenting and discussing policy alternatives and the analytical approaches which underpin them."

Diigo Update 09/26/2021

  • By harnessing the expertise and diverse viewpoints of global participants, Pivot Projects seeks to help solve the world’s ecological challenges, including climate change. We aim to influence on two vectors: by making policymakers aware of new thinking and priorities; and by working with people in their communities to help them identify and address their most pressing sustainability issues. We take a holistic view of humanity’s complex relationships with the rest of nature—incorporating not just science but economics, politics, arts, culture, personal development, community, and beliefs.

  • The Los Angeles Regional Collaborative for Climate Action and Sustainability (LARC) is a network of local and regional decision-makers ensuring a sustainable Los Angeles County prepared for the impacts of climate change. It is one of seven regional collaboratives in California supporting climate change science, policy and planning efforts across sectors. LARC's climate mitigation and adaptation work is driven by cutting edge research on local climate impacts and information management systems. As LA’s sole climate collaborative, LARC’s network includes climate practitioners from city and county government, regional agencies, non-profits, businesses, and academia.

  • The School has been initiated and nurtured by Forum for the Future, with the support of multiple partners. We have the ambition to serve the emerging field of systems change, as a vehicle for connecting and amplifying spheres of learning and practice, and as a case study of an initiative grown explicitly as a system change endeavour. To do this we have used a methodological framework developed by Anna Birney, Director of the School and author of Cultivating System Change: A Practitioner’s Companion (2014). This framework suggests key capabilities for bringing about system change for a sustainable future can be divided into five core areas (read more here on our blog) which underpin our curriculum and our everyday practice.

Diigo Update 05/28/2021

  • Public spaces are an important part of Knight Foundation’s work in cities and the communities where we invest. We believe that great public spaces have the power to transform cities. They are where neighbors can meet and residents can enjoy local arts and culture, take a jog or spend time with family. They help to advance civic engagement and the attachment people feel to their cities — both necessities for creating more informed and engaged communities. Recent research by the Center for Active Design shows that public spaces can help to facilitate community connection, trust and involvement.

Diigo Update 04/24/2021

  • The Consilience Project is developing a body of social theory and analysis that explains and seeks solutions to the unique challenges we face today. It focuses on the deeper generator functions beneath the world’s major problems, drawing on the best of social theory while showing where existing theories and institutions are no longer adequate to fix the current problem landscape. The aim of the project is to help catalyze a cultural enlightenment that will develop a new set of shared values and capacities adequate to the needs of our time.

Diigo Update 04/13/2021

  • Distrust, fear, and contempt have poisoned our society and personal relationships—perhaps including your own. 75% of Americans say this problem has reached a crisis level. Experts say the solution is to cultivate more positive social connections.  A brighter future requires understanding, trust, and grace. Thankfully, 75% of Americans are willing to practice conversations across differences, and 36%—more than 100 million people—want to see a national campaign to improve those interactions.

  • What is Systems Change? Systems change is the emergence of a new pattern of organization or systems structure. (Birney, 2015) It is both a process and an outcome. We are facing unprecedented economic, social, and environmental crises, and current reforms offer ineffective solutions. Naomi Klein has called for a movement of change that “connects the dots” to address the root causes of all current crises facing people and planet.

Diigo Update 03/24/2021

  • In 2008, Tina Roth Eisenberg (Swissmiss) started CreativeMornings out of a desire for an ongoing, accessible event for New York’s creative community. The concept was simple: breakfast and a short talk one Friday morning a month. Every event would be free of charge and open to anyone. Today, attendees gather in cities around the world to enjoy fresh coffee, friendly people, and an international array of breakfast foods. Volunteer hosts and their team members organize local chapters that not only celebrate a city’s creative talent but also promote an open space to connect with like-minded individuals. The growing archive of past breakfast talks is humbling. From design legends to hometown heroes, speakers are selected by each chapter based on a global theme.
